Breaking News: Huge fire and explosions rock south St. Louis (KMOV) -- A huge fire and massive explosion has rocked south St. Louis. The blaze is at a plant near Choteau and Jefferson Streets. Numerous explosions are happening at the scene. KMOV Fire roars through the Praxair plant in the 2200 block of Chouteau Avenue. There are no reports of injuries. St. Louis Fire Chief Sherman George says that everyone inside the plant was able to evacuate safely. The fair is the Praxair facility at 2210 Chouteau. The facility supplies oxygen and other gases to area hospitals. They also supply specialty gasses as well as welding gases and supplies. Police are evacuating nearby homes as well as the Ameren and UPS facilities nearby. Roads in the area of the fire, including Highway 40 are closed. Some cars and trucks parked near the plant are burning. The explosions sent debris raining down on the nearby neighborhoods. Explosions sent fireballs erupting hundreds of feet into the sky. Authorities believe as much as 78,000 cubic feet of material exploded. Firefighters are unable to get too close to the fire due to the dangerous gases.
