High Wind Advisory
Statement as of 8:54 PM EST on January 21, 2006
... Wind Advisory now in effect until 11 PM EST this evening...
The Wind Advisory is now in effect until 11 PM EST this evening.
Southwest winds will shift northwest and abruptly increase to
20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph around sunset... as a cold
front sweeps across the region. The higher elevations of
interior southern Connecticut could experience wind gusts as high
as 55 mph. These strong winds will last through this evening...
then gradually decrease overnight.
A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be
31 to 39 mph or gusts will range between 46 and 57 mph. Winds
this strong can bring down tree branches and with them some power
lines. It will also make driving difficult... especially on
elevated roadways and bridges... and for lightweight and high
profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 8:21 PM EST on January 21, 2006
A developing low pressure system over the Gulf states Sunday afternoon
will deepen and track along the Appalachians Sunday night. The
low will reach the mid Atlantic coast Monday afternoon and then
move northeast away from the area Monday night. With cold air
initially in place late Sunday night... precipitation may start as
snow. However... southeasterly winds ahead of the low will bring
warmer air into the region early Monday morning and the snow will
likely changeover to all rain. Before the changeover to all
rain... some locations away from the coast could see up to a couple
inches of snow.
During Monday the rain could be heavy at times with a total
rainfall of one to one and a half inches by the time the storm
exits the area Monday night. However... with some uncertainty as to
the track of the low... these amounts could change as the event
nears. With rivers and streams running high from recent
rains... there is the potential for another round of flooding with
the upcoming event.
