Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 8:06 PM EST on December 2, 2005
... Wintry weather likely Saturday night into Sunday morning...
... Potential for a more significant winter storm Monday afternoon
into Tuesday...
Intense low pressure north of Montreal will usher in a colder airmass
tonight on brisk west winds... with gusts near 45 mph at times into
early this evening. This will help set the stage for wintry weather
this weekend into early next week.
A first round of wintry weather will arrive Saturday night... as low
pressure moves across the Ohio Valley into the mid Atlantic region.
Light snow will spread into the tri-state area late Saturday night
and continue into Sunday morning. Temperatures in portions of New
York City and along the South Shore and east end of Long Island may
rise into the mid 30s Sunday morning... allowing precipitation to mix
with or change to rain there before precipitation ends... but still a
widespread 1 to 3 inch accumulation is likely.
The potential for a more significant winter storm exists for Monday
afternoon into Tuesday... as another low tracks from the deep south to
the southern mid Atlantic coast Monday afternoon and evening... then
intensifies off the coast Monday night into Tuesday. There is still
some uncertainty in the exact track and intensity of this second
storm... but it does have the potential to bring accumulations of 6
inches or more.
Now is the time to review winter weather preparedness requirements
for your home and vehicle... and to complete fall cleanup activities.Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... or visit our web site at
weather.Gov/NYC... for further details and updates on the return of
wintry weather to the region.
