Winter Weather Statement Statement as of 7:37 am EDT on October 24, 2005
... Wind Advisory in effect from 2 am to 4 PM EDT Tuesday...
The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a Wind Advisory... which is in effect from 2 am to 4 PM EDT Tuesday. As low pressure intensifies and tracks just south and then east of Long Island late tonight... sustained northeasterly winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. These strong winds will continue well into Tuesday afternoon... and then slowly subside as low pressure moves northeast of the region.
Trees across the area are in near full Leaf and soils are loose after the excessive rains of the last couple of weeks. These factors will make the winds capable of Downing large trees and tree limbs... which could also cause scattered power outages.
A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 31 to 39 mph or gusts will range between 46 and 57 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially on bridges and overpasses and for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
For safety sake... avoid trees that seem weak or dead... have exposed roots or large dead branches. If power lines are downed... stay far away from them and notify emergency authorities.

Flood Watch / Flood Statement Statement as of 9:49 PM EDT on October 24, 2005
... Flood Watch in effect from 2 am EDT Tuesday through late Tuesday night...
The National Weather Service in Upton has expanded the
* Flood Watch to include portions of southern Connecticut and southeast New York... including the following areas... in southern Connecticut... northern Fairfield... northern Middlesex... northern New Haven... northern New London... southern Fairfield... southern Middlesex... southern New Haven and southern New London in southeast New York... Bronx... Kings (brooklyn)... Nassau... New York (manhattan)... northeastern Suffolk... northwestern Suffolk... Queens... Richmond (staten island)... southeastern Suffolk... southern Westchester and southwestern Suffolk.
* From 2 am EDT Tuesday through Tuesday evening
* rain moving in from the south will become increasingly widespread as the evening progresses. This rain will also become heavier with time... especially during Tuesday. By the time the steadier rain tapers off later Tuesday evening... a general 2 to 3 inches of rain may have fallen across the watch area... with some locally higher amounts possible.
* Since much of the watch area has seen record rainfall over the last few weeks... this latest round of significant rainfall may cause additional flooding problems. Some of the rivers and streams are still swollen and this additional rainfall over already saturated ground may cause them to rise to near or just over bankfull. Urban... small stream... and poor drainage flooding is also possible.
Remember... a Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

High Wind Advisory Statement as of 9:18 PM EDT on October 24, 2005
... Wind Advisory now in effect from 5 am to 9 PM EDT Tuesday...
As a low pressure system develops and intensifies to our south overnight... sustained northeasterly winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts 45 to nearly 50 mph Tuesday. These strong winds will continue through the all day... gradually diminishing from west to east across the region Tuesday evening as the low pressure center pulls away from the area.
These winds will work on trees that are in near full Leaf and in soils that are loose after the excessive rains of the last couple of weeks. As a result... we may see some Downing of trees although the more likely scenario will be the Downing of large limbs or branches. This will cause at least some scattered power outages.
Remember... a Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 31 to 39 mph or gusts will range between 46 and 57 mph.
