[b]Flood Watch / Flood Statement
Statement as of 12:04 am EDT on October 12, 2005
... An urban and small stream flood advisory has been issued for
Suffolk County... effective until 400 am EDT...
At midnight EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated an
area of very heavy rainfall across the advisory area. Doppler radar
estimated that rainfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour are occurring.
Heavy rain continues to fall across the advisory area. Runoff from
this excessive rainfall will cause minor flooding to occur...
especially along small streams and near low water crossings. Some
locations that will experience flooding include... Babylon...
Brentwood... Bridgehampton... Center Moriches... Centereach... Commack...
Deer Park... Fishers Island... gardner's island... Hauppauge...
Huntington and Huntington Station.
As much as 3 to 5 inches of rain have fallen across eastern Suffolk
County this evening... with an additional 1 to 3 inches of rainfall
possible in the advisory area through 4 am.
Excessive runoff from this storm will cause minor flooding of small
creeks and streams... urban areas... Highways... streets and underpasses
as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. If flooding is observed act quickly. Do not
drive through areas where water covers the roadway.
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross
bridges... dips... or other low spots if water covers the roadway.
Never try to cross a flowing stream... even a small one... on foot. To
escape rising water move up to higher ground.
Forecast as of 12:43 am EDT on October 12, 2005
Now
Areas of heavy rain were falling over central and western portion of Suffolk County from Wading River to near Manorville...Shirley...Ridge and Sound Beach. The area was moving to the northwest at 20 miles an hour and will affect Medford...Coram...Port Jefferson...Stony Brook...and Centereach. The rain will cause ponding on roads and in low lying areas. Motorists should use caution...as the depth of water is harder to determine at night. Visibility will also be reduced in the heavier rain. A urban and small stream flood advisory remains in effect until 400 am.
