Flood Warning
Statement as of 7:31 PM EDT on October 11, 2005
The National Weather Service in Upton NY has issued a
* Flash Flood Warning for...
eastern Suffolk County in southeast New York.
* Until 845 PM EDT.
* At 536 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated an
area of very heavy rainfall across the warned area. Doppler radar
was estimating rainfall of 1 to 2 inches since 430 PM... with at
least 1 more hour of heavy rainfall expected.
* Areas most likely to see flooding during the next couple of hours
will be those east of the William Floyd parkway to Riverhead and
Hampton Bays.
Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... Highways and underpasses. Additionally... country
roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks... streams and other low
lying areas are subject to flooding.
Flooding is occurring or is imminent. Most flood related deaths occur
in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges...
dips... or low water crossings. Never try to cross a flowing stream...
even a small one... on foot. To escape rising water move up to higher
ground.
Flood Watch / Flood Statement
Statement as of 4:12 PM EDT on October 11, 2005
... Flood Watch in effect from 8 PM EDT this evening through
Thursday evening...
The National Weather Service in Upton has expanded the
* Flood Watch to include a portion of southeast New York...
including the following areas... in southeast New York...
Nassau... northeastern Suffolk... northwestern Suffolk...
southeastern Suffolk and southwestern Suffolk.
* From 8 PM EDT this evening through Thursday evening
* an area of low pressure will strengthen in the western Atlantic
tonight and move northwest. With abundant moisture still in
place over the tri-state region... rain will start to increase in
intensity and coverage this evening. Periods of rain will
continue all night and all day Wednesday. To make things more
complicated and potentially wetter... another possibly stronger
storm will follow the first wave and enhance the rainfall
Wednesday night and Thursday. Due to the abundant moisture
availability... heavy rain is likely through this time frame.
Rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches are possible across the watch
area through the day Thursday.
* Since the majority of the region is saturated from the rains
over the weekend... this latest round of significant rainfall
will cause more flooding problems. Unlike the weekend rain
event... heavy rain from this latest surge may impact the entire
region. This time... it appears the heaviest rain will move from
the eastern sections and eventually slide westward. West of New
York City... which received the most rainfall over the
weekend... may see many rivers and streams rising to near or
above bank full from this next batch of heavy rain. There will also
be urban... small stream and poor drainage flooding... especially
where leaves and branches have blocked storm drains and sewers.
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
