Special Weather Statement Statement as of 10:30 PM EDT on July 24, 2005
... Hot humid weather is on tap for the area Tuesday and Wednesday...
A high pressure system will continue to move southeast off the mid Atlantic coast this evening. This will allow a warm front to move northeast and pass across the region on Monday. An increasing southwest wind flow will transport higher humidity and warmer temperatures across the entire region.
A hot humid maritime tropical airmass will settle across the region causing temperatures to rise into the 90s across New York City and surrounding areas both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. As dew point temperatures rise into the lower and mid 70s... heat index values are forecast to rise and reach between 100 and 105 degrees in New York City and Metro New Jersey during Tuesday afternoon. This will make it feel extremely uncomfortable.
There will be some minor relief along the Atlantic Ocean beaches and the Long Island Sound shorelines as onshore winds keep temperatures from rising above 90 degrees.
A slow moving cold front will move south of the region during Wednesday night... which will provide relief to the region.
However... as waves of low pressure form along and move northeast along this front... there is the potential for heavy showers and thunderstorms... mainly from Wednesday through Thursday.
